1450 Senior Planner / Planning Manager - Orange County, California

Position Title: Senior Planner / Planning Manager

JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Planner / Planning Manager position is primarily responsible for leading and managing the planning team in all aspects of urban design, conceptual design, master planning, site planning, and conducting research of various planning studies, as well as other duties assigned by the Planning Principal.


• Direct, oversee, and assist in performing all planning activities from project initiation to completion
• Coordinate with all parties engaged in the project to develop, create, and implement design master plans and detailed site plan
• Establish project objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them
• Assess the feasibility development of proposals and prepare site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations, and identify necessary changes
• Evaluate or assist in the evaluation of rezonings, ordinance amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances, and other proposals
• Coordinate work with consultants or architects during the formulation of plans
• Interface with clients throughout project and manage relationships to ensure customer satisfaction
• Apply basic understanding of various building typologies (including residential, commercial office, and retail) all at a range of development intensities
• Apply topographic influences and landscape architectural principles to master planning and site planning efforts
• Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether plans comply with laws, regulations, or standards
• Research, observe, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources to stay informed regarding economic or legal issues involved in zoning codes, building codes, and/or environmental regulations
• Determine the effects of regulatory limitations on projects
• Assist with the creation and formatting of presentation material
• Assist with other duties as necessary
• Maintain Our Client standards of performance and policies at all times



• Lead, motivate, supervise, and evaluate team members’ work activities and performance
• Communicate with Planning Principal regarding the team’s performance and identify/address group and individual strengths and weaknesses, staff development needs, morale issues, disciplinary actions, etc.
• Facilitate communication among the team regarding project status, objectives, and performance, and address any project issues




• Knowledge of company policies, standards, and procedures
• Knowledge of laws, codes, and government regulations relevant to the practice of urban planning, and applicable strategies necessary to comply with such codes
• Working knowledge of a broad range of building typologies including low, medium, and high-density residential, commercial office, retail/food and beverage, hospitality, and mixed use
• General knowledge of landscape architecture
• General knowledge of civil engineering principals, landform grading, and earthwork
• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of technical plans, drawings, models, and other such presentation materials
• Knowledge of industry-related computer operations and applications, including Auto-CAD, Revit, SketchUp, InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Excel
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
• Knowledge of mathematic principles and their applications
• Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar



• Skills in applying industry standards and graphic conventions data to the organization and arrangement of information (i.e. plans, elevations, sections, etc.) to formulate a unified presentation
• Strong listening, oral/verbal, and written communication skills necessary to effectively interact and share information with supervisors, co-workers, consultants, clients, vendors, etc.
• Strong skills in reading comprehension to understand the content in work-related documents
• Skill in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to brainstorm and formulate alternatives
• Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a given action to evaluate potential outcomes and implement solutions
• Skill in understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making
• Skill in determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes
• Skills in coordinating, directing, motivating, and monitoring project team members as they work
• Skills in conveying information and teaching others how to perform an activity
• Strong organizational skills to maintain project-related data, including project folders, drawings, submittals, correspondence, etc.
• Time management skills to effectively manage one’s own time and the time of others



• Ability to read and interpret documents, such as zoning ordinances and contracts/agreements
• Ability to analyze needs and project requirements to prepare a design solution
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and ask questions as appropriate
• Ability to estimate size, distance, and quantity
• Ability to sequence tasks in a certain order or pattern according to specific project requirements/schedule
• Ability to create and manage spreadsheets in Excel to accurately quantify and calculate project statistics
• Ability to accurately read and interpret drawings to understand how a graphic representation defines and delineates elements in the built environment
• Ability to visualize how a constructed element will appear in 3D as indicated by a two-dimensional representation/drawing
• Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted
• Ability to handle multiple assignments at one time and switch back and forth from one task to another based on priority and sense of urgency
• Ability to operate computer applications, such as AutoCAD, InDesign, SketchUp, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Excel, as well as demonstrate the ability to learn new software applications specific to the company and industry
• Ability to ensure quality control by monitoring personal, peer, and the organization’s performance, and to take corrective action or make recommendations for improvement
• Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time
• Ability to work well with others even when confronted with stressful work environments


• Other necessary characteristics include integrity, attention to detail, dependability, analytical thinking, innovation, initiative, leadership/managerial capabilities, customer service orientation, cooperation, stress tolerance, team player, and professionalism


• Must have B.S. in Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture
• Minimum of 15 years of extensive experience in physical planning and design
• Minimum five years of management experience
• Adept at managing client relationships
• Proficient in operating CADD, Revit, SketchUp, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Excel
• Strong oral, written, and verbal skills in the English language are required
• Strong organizational skills are required
• Must have a valid driver’s license
